Rubbish free lunches
Encourage your school to have a rubbish free lunch policy (or at least one rubbish free lunch day per week).
Many schools are contemplating how to best develop ongoing behaviour change with food waste. There are many ways to develop a whole-school program that reduces parent complaints, celebrates achievements and helps save the environment.
It’s really important that community members are educated about why the school is introducing its lunch waste program, don’t assume that everyone already knows. You could start by quoting some facts from the Keep Australia Beautiful. Have students present at assembly, write in the newsletter and put information on your school’s website.
Your lunch waste program will be undermined if students are required to bring nude food but staff are still bringing packaging. As a group, brainstorm solutions to waste problems and use the opportunity to educate staff about waste issues.
The Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge is a great way to launch your school’s lunch waste program. The Challenge rewards students and teachers for reducing the amount of waste produced on a daily basis at school. The Challenge is an excellent springboard and the competition provides a great incentive for your community.
