Rich Task

News Flash!

Your school has been selected by the Oceans of the World Society to help us create awareness about the affects of pollution on marine animals. Your grade 4 class has the job of making an awareness video that will be placed online. The purpose of this video is to show the way garbage makes its way from your lunch box to the ocean and how it affects marine animals. You will work in teams to help research, design and create a news bulletin showing what is happening to our oceans’ animals due to people not disposing correctly of their garbage.

Click on this link and watch the Behind the News Plastic Oceans video. It is an example of what you will be doing in this unit of work and provides important facts about the issue at hand!

The team will consist of 5 people and each will have a specific role.

  •         A news anchor – the person at the news desk presenting the issue and crossing to various experts,
  •         A correspondent reporting from the school yard looking at what is in students’ lunchboxes,
  •         A correspondent reporting at the beach/waterway looking at garbage going into the ocean,
  •         A marine animal expert showing the affects of garbage on the oceans marine life,
  •         A local government representative informing the community on possible solutions to this issue.

This news bulletin should be about 10 minutes in total and all members of your team must speak. You will be presenting your videos to the class in the last week of term and the video will be uploaded online for the world to see. Each task in this iQuest will help you with your assigned role through each week in building up to the final product.

Things you must include in your video:

  •         Introduction of the topic by the news anchor – general discussion of the journey of garbage and its affects on marine life.
  •          Correspondent in the school yard commenting on the amount of garbage students produce each day, interview students about what is in their lunch boxes.
  •         Correspondent at the beach with the marine expert discussing the affect that garbage is having on the ocean and its marine life.
  •         An interview with a representative from the local government discussing what they plan to do about this issue.

You will be assessed on:
  •         Your ability to take on a role and portray a character confidently
  •          How well you research using the internet and other resources and how well you record and deliver that information for each role
  •         Your understanding of the journey of rubbish into the ocean and its implications on marine life
  •         Your understandings for possible solutions to the issue of marine pollution
  •          How well you use technology, e.g. video camera, camera, microphone, etc.
  •          Your ability to work effectively as a team and to solve problems collectively.
Take a look at the rubric link below for how you will be assessed.

Key ideas and essential questions to think about in your discussions:
  •          Why is the ocean important?
  •          Why is our marine life important?
  •          How does garbage affect our marine animals?
  •          What needs to be done to stop this from happening in the future?
  •          What can we do at school to help?
